When the situation arises, the filesystem is mounted read-only almost quickly. If you are working with an active root partition, you will need to boot it in order to perform operations on the boot media. Again, if this error occurs on a partition much larger than a simple root partition, unmount the affected corrupted file system and continue with these operations.
Remove the journal for this particular file system (effectively converting it to ext2):
Now you need to fsck to fix any possible problems (use the -y flag, declare all fixes “yes”, -C on the progress bar):
After that, create a new journal that effectively recreates the ext3 partition:
You will definitely be able to mount the partition normally as an ext3 partition if that was the case this time:
